Mom’s Magic🥘🍚
This blog is about one of the emotions which all of us experience at some point in our life. This is a common thread which connects all of us together in the same page through out the world.
This blog is not about food. But the sentiments attached to the food. There are certain things common, which connect all of us through out this universe. We may belong to any caste, creed ,colour, country continent, it doesn’t matter. The thread connecting is the same.
Emotions, Sentiments, Hunger are some of the common threads which connect all of us in the same manner. In this blog I want to take this thread and weave a short story with food as the main character to write with.
The story begins in an airport. Nitin is waiting to board a flight to his hometown. He has finished his higher studies and has also secured a decent job to start his career. He had decided to visit his parents and spend few weeks with them before joining his job. There are reasons for his this short trip for few weeks. He wanted to spend some time with his parents. He also wanted to recharge his battery by enjoying the home made food cooked by his mom. A busy daily grind of hectic routine in job front was anticipated by him. His mom wasn’t keeping well. He also wanted to tell about the girl he was dating so that he can take things go to the next level . All factors put together ended in a short trip to his home.
Nitin was waiting for the flight to take off and reach the home as soon as possible . Above all the things,
Nitin was waiting eagerly to taste his MOM’s HOME COOKED FOOD /MAA KA HAATH KA KHANA(In Hindi).
Nitin had learnt basic cooking staying away from home since few years. He was also taking advantage of all the food apps available to satisfy his taste buds . But, but he could feel that nothing could compensate the food prepared by his mom.
The food served during the flight tasted very mediocre for Nitin. Even the coffee, tea and the snacks bought in the airport didn’t taste good now. Usually he enjoys eating out . But this feeling of going to reach home soon within few hours changed his mood totally. With an excitement of meeting his parents, to be in his home , in his bed to sleep, Nitin went off to sleep in the flight.
After a long flight Nitin landed in his hometown. He could sense a feeling of happiness and a tear swelling up in his eyes at the same time. As his mom was unwell only his dad had come to receive him from the airport. After exchanging the pleasantries they reached home.
Stepping into his home where had lived through his growing years was an unexplainable happy moment for him. His mom was there sitting on the sofa with a broad smile on her face as always. She was looking a bit weak. Old age problems of being diabetic. She was prescribed medicines to take regularly. Due to medicines she was feeling a kinda weak and tired. A little bit of tears for both mom and son made the scene more sentimental.
For the first time they had hired a cook to do the regular cooking needed for everyday. This was very unusual for Nitin as he had always seen his mom on her toes and being active the whole day taking care of all the household chores. After the regular conversation they all went off to sleep. Lying on his bed Nitin could sense a feeling of comfort . His room was his world till he left for his studies. His books, guitar, video games all were his friends forever. It was midnight. Time to sleep. But, due to jet lag sleep dodged him.
The next day when Nitin woke up it was 11.00 am in the morning. The fresh aroma of the cooking was intoxicating and inviting for him. He could see his dad reading a newspaper. In this Internet era he still believed in touching a newspaper and reading it too. Nitin loved this quality in his dad. And there was this sitar music playing in the background to make the ambience of the house very peaceful. The feeling of their presence in the house made Nitin more happy. The house was filled with the aroma from the cooking.
After refreshing he was a ready for the day. His favourite strong coffee was ready. With a cuppa strong coffee in his hand , he joined his father to do the crossword puzzle and sudoku in the newspaper. A sip of the strong coffee made him more energetic. It was fun to do the puzzle with his dad after a long time.
After spending sometime with his dad, he went to the kitchen to see his mom busy cooking. In a soft tone Nitin asked his mom, “ why are you cooking? You are not well. Isn’t it? Where is the cook?”. His mom with a smile on her face replied,” You have come to spend some time with us. In this few weeks of your stay , I want to cook for you. I want to enjoy by cooking your favourite foods of your choice”. Nitin felt very happy. He hugged his mom and said, “ Oh ,Wow! That’s obsolutely fantastic mom. So nice of you to be so thoughtful”. His mom replied “ Hey is there any need to thank me?. I am your mom. Tell me whatever you want me to make . I will prepare for you during your stay with us”. Nitin with a broad smile on his face replied,” of course mom. I love whatever you cook . Any simple food is also okay. But, let’s make a deal mom. Everyday I will assist you in cutting vegetables and other prep work needed for cooking. This way I will also get to spend more time with you. You will also not be You will also not be overtaxed with work”. His mom also was happy to hear this. She could see a son who was always in to his world few years back. Now time and circumstances have changed him a lot she thought in her mind. She was also happy about the same.
Nitin felt like a small kid to roam around the house. Each and every corner of the house looked new to him. With no phone calls to disturb Nitin enjoyed each and every second of his stay.
“ HOME SWEET HOME “ - is so true as a saying he thought in his mind.
He enjoyed lazing around wherever and whenever he wanted to in his home . It gave him a relaxed feeling altogether. He went to his room to see the diary notes he had written a s a student in his school days.
Reminiscing is all about happy recollections and thinking back to stories from the past. It took him back to his old days as student. For sometime he forgot the present and went back to cherish those memories green in his mind as a student.
Deep in his own world, suddenly he could hear his mom calling him, “Nitin, come on lunch is ready. We all can have together”. Reading the diary he didn’t realise the time. It was already lunch time. With all the excitement Nitin replied back,”:Yes mom, I am coming”.
The strong pleasant smell of the spices, seasoning was appetising for Nitin. He and his dad helped in setting the dining table. Sabzi( vegetable curry) ,Dal , Roti( flat bread) ,Pickles , ghee(clarified butter) ,curd and lots of cut salads all set in table. It looked like a feast for him.
It was like a “FIRST DAY FIRST SHOW” of a movie release feeling for him. Totally inTotally in a joyous mood Nitin started to have his lunch.
Just a bit of the food made him ecstatic. After a long time he was tasting such a good food . His mom’s food. In a delightful voice Nitin told “ Super tasty food mom. There is indeed a magic in your cooking. I missed this food a lots mom.” His mom was equally glad to see her son enjoying the food wholeheartedly. She replied with a grin,” There is a magic in your stay with us. I couldn’t cook till yesterday. But today I am able to cook and serve you too. Your presence has been the tonic and a boost for my mind to become active. It has been a change from our monotonous routine. So, it’s not only you dear. We are also enjoying this magic”. His dad continued the conversation by saying ,” There is a magic in the air. Which is positive and happy vibes totally”. He was indeed glad to see his wife better than the day before. A very simple message I wanted to convey in this blog. Success, Fame, Money, may vary from person to person. But this “ MOM’s MAGIC “ is the same for one and all.
USA- BURGER, ITALY- PIZZA& PASTA,
UK-FISH &CHIPS,
PAD THAI- THAILAND,
TACOS- MEXICO,
INDIA- ROTI & SABZI,
SUSHI- JAPAN,
KIMCHI& RICE - SOUTH KOREA, to name a few.The bottom line is that irrespective of the country we belong to and the staple food we enjoy on a daily basis, the sentiments that connect are the same.
FOOD IS THE MAIN FACTOR FOR OUR SUSTAINANCE. THIS APPLIES TO ALL, BE IT A PAUPER OR A KING IRRESPECTIVE OF THE WEALTH. WE ALL STRIVE, STRUGGLE TO SATISFY OUR TUMMY WHICH QUIETLY DEMANDS THE SALT AND SUGAR AT REGULAR INTERVALS. AS WE AGE IT IS A NATURAL PHENOMENON THAT WE ALL YEARN FOR FOOD COOKED BY OUR DEAREST MOM. AGE OF THE PERSON IS NOT A CRITERIA IN THIS LONGING.
A very simple message I wanted to convey through this blog. Success, Fame, Money, may vary from person to person. But the sentiment and the emotions surrounding the “ MOM’s MAGIC” is the same for one and all. Hope you will all agree with me .
Would be indeed interesting to know the thoughts on mom’s magic in the comment ssection.

Uma , I felt my mom. Everytime mom says the same words.
She doesn't mind whether she is tired or sick. All she does is cook for me ....
Whenever I come home, even a simple dish is scrumptious. I say. " mom I follow the same recipe as you said, why my dish doesn't taste like yours ? "
That's the MOM'S MAGIC 🫶🏽🥺
Well written, I got emotional 😊🥰
There’s so much love and comfort woven through this story. 💛
