This post is about a musical instruments performance which I saw today evening

Temple festivals are very popular in India. Be it North,South, East or Western part of India. Each state has its own way of celebrating and culminating a festival.

In this blog I am going to write about a performance called “THAYAMBAKA” popular in all temple festivals in Kerala. I have posted few videos to see and enjoy the same.

THAYAMBAKA or TAYAMBAKA is a type of sold CHENDA performance that developed in then South Indian State of Kerala , in which the main player at the centre improvises rhythmically on the beats of half-a-dozen or few more CHENDA and ILATHALAM players around.

I got this opportunity to watch this performance today evening. I could record few videos of the same which I would love to share with the audience here. I was dumbstruck to see the way the synchronised performance was without missing a single beat. The age of the performers starts from 18 yrs and goes upto 70 yrs of age 😱. Their performance levels were the same irrespective of their age. The energy and the vibrations the beats generates cannot be explained by mere words. You get a feeling like you are in a trance. And they perform standing without a break for 1 1/2 to 2 hrs continuously.

A THAYAMBAKA performance on the CHENDA has thus it’s focus on the stick-and-palm rolls produced on the ITANTALA(treble) of the CHENDA , while the rhythm is laid by his fellow instrumentalists on the VALANTHALA (Bass) Chendas and Ilatalam(Cymbals).

The atmosphere is fully electrifying by these beats. It makes you also sync and beat the steps along with the rhythm 🥁. These rhythm beats are good stress busters . Just listen and your tension and stress vanishes like a magic. This is my personal opinion .
