SELF- DISCIPLINE đ§âđ§âđ§âď¸
The thoughts and the story written in this blog is not limited to children only. This blog is for everyone irrespective of the age they are in. Being âSELF-DISCIPLINEDâ leads to you a path of success.
Self discipline is the ability to control yourself and to make yourself work hard or behave in a particular way without needing anyone else to tell you what to do.
Self discipline doesnât come by itself. It has to be cultivated.
HOW????
When we are born in this world we are all like a mound of clay to be moulded. A clay will take the shape of however it is being moulded. Like wise it is parents responsibility to instil this quality of being self disciplined for their kids from their childhood. Once this is initiated it is taken care by itself. We donât have to bother as this quality will slowly immerse into their system.
All kids will not like to listen to their parents. There are children who are a rebel and show their displeasure by not listening to their parents. But thatâs okay. In this screen era it is a tough task to make children understand the importance of imbibing certain qualities for their good. They need an instant answer for their â WHY?â. With a Google in their pocket, to answer all their questions it is all more difficult to convince them the good and the bad. For some children a mere explanation is not sufficient. They need a solid proof to show that it is indeed important to be self disciplined.
BASED ON MY ASSUMPTIONS I HAVE PENNED A SHORT STORY EMPHASISING THE MESSAGE I WANT TO CONVEY IN THIS BLOG . ALSO THIS SMALL STORY IS FOR ALL OF US TO READ. IT IS NOT LIMITED TO KIDS OR PARENTS ONLY.
Anil was fast asleep . It was morning . Time to go to school. His mom was busy in the kitchen preparing breakfast and lunch to be packed for him to take with him to school. His Dad was also busy getting ready to leave for office. Given the traffic woes he couldnât afford to be a minute late. Hence his mom had to balance both the kitchen and also sending Anil to school in time. But Anil being a rebel in nature would never listen to his parents. It was always a battlefield like scenario in the mornings to send him to school. It was a regular feature for him to miss the school bus. And he had to be dropped to the school in a hurry-burry. To make him understand the need to be in a routine and disciplined all went in vain. He was stubborn in not listening. His parents were in a fix on how to put sense in his mind. As far as they were aware none of his classmates and friends were so careless. Even during PTA his teacher complained about him not regular with his homework. It was a difficult task for them to deal with all these trivial but important issues.
With no sight of any solution the routine was going on as usual. It was a regular affair for Anil to play games in the mobile and sleep late. This made him tired as he was sleep deprived to go to school in time. This was a regular affair. They only wished a magic fairy would come and âwhooshâ change everything with her magic wand đŞ in a seconds time.
About Anil, other than playing video games he was interested in outdoor sports. He was very fast in running. He ran with an ease and was considered to be a one of the good runners in his class. The annual sports day was approaching. He was selected for 200 m race. He got selected in the prelims. With lots of excitement he told his parents about his selection for finals.
The annual sports day was on the following weekend. It was on a Sunday. Anil had everyday practices in the school. The day before the race he had a special practice session. For this he had to reach school in the morning hours. As usual he was late as he slept late in the night . Once he reached the school he saw that the practice had started and he was late. His batch had run fewer times for the practice. His teacher was angry as he was late for the practice session and hence didnât let him practice that day.
On the way to home his dad told him that he didnât want this to repeat the next day as it is going to be a final race. Anil as usual didnât bother and was playing games in the mobile. His Dad became furious. He plucked the phone and scolded him for being so irresponsible. But Anil wasnât bothered. He replied â Dad , donât have to worry so much . I will wake up early tomorrow. Just chillâ.
After reaching home it was again a screen playing time for Anil with full concentration. There was no way he would listen to his parents as it was a holiday. After dinner his parents advised him to sleep soon as he had to wake up and go for the race. But, âNOâ Anil wouldnât listen , the stubborn boy he is. As usual Anil went to sleep late.
The morning alarm was set for 6.00am as he had to report to the school by 7.00 am. The event was supposed to start by 7.30 am. Anil was fast asleep. His parents tried to wake him up. Anil wouldnât listen a word. As he had slept late he was too tired to wake up. No amount of cajoling could wake him up. With lots of efforts he woke up to see the time was already 7.15 am. He saw his parents angrily staring at him. He started to get ready fast. But, given the traffic woes on the road he could not reach the school I time. He was late. But still his teacher was kind enough to understand and allow him to participate in the event.
Anil happily joined the team. But, he was feeling tired . He was not feeling fresh. His eyes were burning. He didnât feel like opening his eyes as sun was high up in the sky. It was hot. When his turn for race came he was exhausted. For the sake of participation he ran as there was very little energy left in him. He came 6 th in the race. His parents could see his body language and understand that he was not in his regular form. With a sad and long face Anil came running towards his parents. He started crying uncontrollably as he couldnât win the race.
Slowly his parents consoled him and took him to an ice cream parlour. Bought him his favourite flavour of ice cream. With ice cream in his hand Anil told his parents, â I should have won the race. As my teacher says I am very fast. Today the boy who came first used to be behind me always in the practice sessions. But today he came first and I was behind him. Thatâs not fair â , he told with a sad expression on his face. His Dad replied in a soft tone to Anil, â Agreed, you are best and fast runner in your class. But still you couldnât win. Can you tell me the reason ?â Anil at once replied â I was kinda tired. So I could not run fast in my usual speed. My eyes were burning too â.
His parents could realise that this was the golden moment to put sense and make him understand what it is to be self- disciplined. His mom continued the conversation in a soft tone, â Are you aware of the reason why you were tired with burning eyes?. Anil said â NO, mamaâ. His dad continued the conversation by saying, â The reason is very simple. You didnât have a proper rest and sleep. You slept very late after playing video games for a very long time. So your eyes had burning sensation too.â. Anil could understand the gravity of his mistake now. He could understand what his parents were trying to tell him. The reason for understanding his mistake was, he was not playing any game in the mobile now and was listening to them with concentration. He could realise the mistake on his part.
In a sorrowful tone and with a downcast face he said, âSORRYâ, Mama and Papa, I will learn to be in a routine and be disciplined. I understand my mistake nowâ. His mom and dad were very happy to see a different son who was not only accepting his mistake but also was ready to listen to them. From the next day Anil slowly started to be in a routine. Initially it was indeed a tough task for him, but slowly he learnt to be self-disciplined. His parents were happy and relieved.
Days and years passed by. Anil was now in high school. He had topped in the school exams. There was a ceremony organised by the school to felicitate him with an award . On the special day Anil received the award and his proud parents were brimming with happiness to see the same. Anil was asked to say few words on the stage. Anil took the mic and like any other school boy thanked everyone for his success. And finally he told ,â I want to thank my parents wholeheartedly for this success. They only taught me what self-discipline is when I was a kid. Till today being self-disciplined has helped me achieve success in my studies and sports too. Anilâs parents couldnât control their tears . They were proud as parents as they could instil a good quality in their son as a small kid.
If we donât cultivate self-discipline within us then, setbacks tend to happen to adults too both in their professional or personal lives .
Self discipline if cultivated, is easy to set goals and work towards achieving it. The reason is the systematic routine which we adhere to makes us work without any inhibitions.
Like I mentioned in the starting of this blog,
âA clay will take the shape in the way it is being mouldedâ.
Likewise
When born in this world we are all like a mound of clay ready to be moulded and take the shape we are moulded to.
I sincerely hope audience will enjoy reading this blog which has conveyed a simple but a sensible message to be agreed over by all.

Loved how simply yet powerfully you unpacked the idea of self-discipline. Itâs not about being harsh on ourselves, but about gently showing up again and again. That line about discipline being a form of self-respect really hit home. Thanks for this grounded reminder
Loved this, thanks for explaining the importance of self-discipline with such a good story. I hope when my kids' grow I can find that golden moment to teach them too.
