How does it feel?? Hmmmmmm, well initially you don’t understand, but slowly and steadily we get to accept our children are grown ups now who are ready to fly away from the nest. So kinda weird feeling, but slowly and steadily a friend like vibes is born to grow into a healthy sapling
I love this take. I’m not quite there yet with my son - I will probably cling to the illusion that he is still “under our care” for another year or two. He will still be financially dependent for a while, and while I will never hold that over his head, I’d like to believe that it will motivate him to come home once in a while, so his mama can do his laundry and his papa can make a curry for him. How does it feel when you first acknowledge, our relationship has evolved to equals.
My mom really liked your post. Thank you for writing it!
She also said that being a friend to your grown-up child is one of the hardest parts of parenting.
You need to understand their perspective, be open to their thoughts and opinions, and then gently share what you have in mind.
Most importantly, you have to be a safe space for them. So, they can open up to you and talk about anything, no matter the topic. It’s such a deep and layered thing.
